What If Your Visa Expires While Waiting For Another One In South Africa?

If you have submitted a visa renewal application in South Africa through VFS and your current visa expires after the submission, you are generally allowed to remain legally in the country until you receive a decision on your new visa.

However, it’s important to note that during this period, you are not permitted to leave South Africa.

If you exit the country while waiting for your new visa, you may be considered as having overstayed and could potentially face a ban from re-entering South Africa.

It is crucial to follow the proper procedures and ensure that you have a valid visa or pending application status to maintain your legal status in the country.

Department of Home Affairs Extends Blanket Visa Extension

The Department of Home Affairs recently made an important announcement on March 29, 2023, granting an additional extension for visa and waiver applicants in South Africa.

This timely announcement brought relief to anxious visa holders, as the previous extension was scheduled to expire in just 48 hours on March 31.

Under this extension, eligible temporary residents who are still awaiting the outcomes of their visa and waiver applications are now permitted to legally remain in South Africa until December 31, 2023.

To qualify for the extension, temporary residents must have entered South Africa legally and submitted their applications through VFS on or before March 31, 2023.

For those who no longer wish to pursue their visa or waiver applications, leaving South Africa on or before December 31, 2023, allows them to depart without being deemed undesirable upon reentry.

It’s important to note that residents from countries not exempt from visas, who have travelled outside South Africa, will need to apply for a visitor’s visa to reenter the country.

Visa applicants who have retained their receipts and reentered South Africa with a visitor’s visa will be permitted to return and await the outcome of their visa extension.

This extension provides temporary residents with an extended period to address their visa and waiver applications and ensures their legal stay in South Africa until the end of December 2023.
